For some reason, I have part of the lyrics of Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell stuck in my head – “That you don't know what you've got till it's gone”. The relevance for me was the fact that I was saved in an era when salvation was absolutely real, preachers were anointed, conviction was tangible and we never fudged the Spirit’s presence in our services. However, we now seem to spend more time today debating that the work of the Spirit died out in the Apostolic age and we now have no baptism in the Holy Spirit, no spiritual gifts, no fruit of the Spirit and as a consequence, we see no evidence of the demonstration of the Spirit’s power. Our churches are rapidly becoming powerless, glorified social clubs where we discuss topics including politics, sport and our rights to bear arms rather than the lost going to a Christless eternity, the reality of hell and having a passion for this world that should cause us to weep before a holy God. Therefore, for me, I feel something of knowing what it is that the Christian Church has now lost and it is heartbreaking.
I recently came across the Christian Comedy Culture on the web (by accident) where churches invite a Christian comedian to entertain the flock. I Googled what is the definition of Christian Comedy as follows: Christian comedy is a subgenre of comedy where the material presented is aimed towards a Christian audience. The performances are typically held on church grounds or at off-site, church-sponsored venues. The material often contains Christian references, although this is not a requirement. I must admit that I enjoy a little Christian humor and it can be a powerful tool in the Preacher’s toolbox to reinforce a point, however, I then clicked on a link to a radio interview with a so-called female Christian comedian who had decided to take her act to the outside world for greater exposure. Within <2 minutes of listening to this lady, her language became colorful and I quickly realized that this was no born-again Christian but a worldly foul-mouthed person who seized opportunities to use sacred material as a joke. Note: Churches invite such people into God’s House to entertain but I am old-school who happens to believe that if we want to see our nation, our world, our culture changed for Jesus, it is intercession not entertainment the church needs. It reminds me of Matthew 23:37: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!”.
May I be bold in this blog and ask all my readers one basic question? What do you think God feels about the way the Christian Church has evolved in 2020? I believe that God is weeping over His Church because of the unbelief, the antics of what is being performed in His Name. I see blatant disobedience of His Word regarding the sanctity of marriage and the support of such practices in the church which resulted in Sodom and Gomorrah being destroyed. The holiness and examination required by God’s Word before we partake of the Lord’s Table, and so the list goes on. When you are really born again, you no longer play-act and hope you are not found out, but you become a new creation in Christ and you are genuinely born again and Christ will be evident to others in your daily walk with Him.
As we use this time of the pandemic to seek the heart of God, may we pray with earnestness that God will pour out a mighty Holy Ghost Revival that will overturn the tables of tradition, sin, and those with a form of godliness but no power and may there once again be rejoicing in heaven as sinners truly repent.
